Abstract

This review paper critically examines the role of love languages in shaping the experiences of expectant parents during pregnancy and the perinatal period, considering their dual roles as both parents and partners. Grounded in Gary Chapman’s conceptual framework of love languages, the paper synthesizes and analyses existing research to elucidate how these distinct modes of emotional expression impact communication, relationship dynamics, and overall well-being during this transformative life phase. The impact of love languages is examined from two intertwined perspectives: that of parents as partners and as caregivers. Drawing from empirical studies, the paper discusses how the recognition and utilization of each partner’s love language can enhance relationship satisfaction, emotional connection, and the co-parenting dynamic. Additionally, it explores the potential implications of these dynamics on the mental and emotional well-being of expectant parents, emphasizing the importance of a supportive environment and open dialogue. Furthermore, the paper identifies gaps in the existing literature and proposes directions for future research in this domain. It highlights the need for studies that explore the longitudinal effects of love language alignment on parental relationships and family dynamics beyond the perinatal period. The review also underscores the significance of culturally sensitive investigations that consider the diverse expressions of love within various sociocultural contexts.
